Meet Cathal – from Student to Actor

My journey from PAS student to an actor with Blue Teapot

An interview with Performing Arts School alumnus Cathal Scott Reynolds

What was the best thing about being in the Performing Arts School?

The best thing for me was that you received a grounding in all aspects of theatre, not just acting on stage. For example, there was costume design, puppet making, prop building and/or designing, and all the other jobs to be done in order for a production to be staged.

What are some of your favourite memories?

There are three – going to different theatres around Galway, being both a cast member and Assistant Stage Manager of OLIVER TWISTS…..no it’s not a typo…that was the name of it (you could call it a twist on the original!) and secondly mask making. I also had a great experience when I was picked to take part in a reality TV show called Salon Confidential. That was a wonderful experience and my first foray into a live working TV set. I try to put into practice, on a daily basis, everything I learned in the school.

Did you have a favourite subject and why?

Drama. This is because I always wanted to be an actor. From an early age, the world of acting fascinated and excited me. I always wanted to release my inner child, let my creative juices flow and show my flamboyant self. I can do this with acting.

How did you get into the Theatre Company?

By following up on an advertisement in one of the local papers. While a student, I always endeavoured to be in the ensemble but at the time, there were no open auditions. So, when the chance came along to audition, I was in my element. After 4 auditions I was offered a place in the ensemble, and I accepted it.

 What’s next for you?

I am looking forward to taking part in the production Fairy Tree in November and December. After that, I hope to be involved in many more shows, both on stage and TV. I am currently writing down experiences I encounter every day and hope to one day soon make them stage worthy, one person shows and shows with a large cast are my next endeavours.  Hopefully, maybe share the screen with Andrew Scott, that is a real dream of mine. After all, he’s my very famous and very talented first cousin!
